What is vascular pain?
Vascular pain is seen in arterial disease and is described as a disorder of the body's arteries in which too little blood reaches the legs and feet. This can result in pain.
Cause
Arterial disease is usually caused by arteriosclerosis. It is mainly seen in patients above the age of 55. The causes of arteriosclerosis are mainly high blood pressure and diabetes.
Signs and symptoms
Patients usually complain of pain in the legs that is brought on by walking but which disappears when standing still (intermittent claudication). If the symptoms are severe, the feet may become discoloured and sores may form on the feet that are slow to heal.
How is vascular pain diagnosed?
The diagnosis is made according to the patient's pattern of symptoms and after examination of the feet for discoloration and sores. In addition, the legs are examined to see if the arteries are easily felt.
