What is Morton neuralgia?
Morton neuralgia is a painful disorder of the nerve between the toes due to damage and/or loss of function in this nerve.
Cause
Morton neuralgia is caused by pressure on the nerve between the 3rd and 4th toes. It occurs mainly in middle-aged women and can be caused by excessive load on the front of the foot as happens when wearing high heels. Fallen arches of the forefoot and accidents can also play a role. The prolonged irritation of the nerve results in tiny lesions that eventually lead to swelling of the nerve (neuroma).
Signs and symptoms
Morton neuralgia involves pain at the level of the third toe and forefoot which is brought on by loading the forefoot and/or by walking.
